It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. The world is also ageing rapidly. People aged 60 and older make up 12.3 per cent globally, and by 2050, that number will rise to almost 22 per cent.

UNFPA works on pathways to strengthen national capacities for population data collection, as well as on strengthening partnerships for the development of comprehensive rights- and evidence-based population policies. UNFPA in Serbia also provides assistance for the Government and civil society to formulate comprehensive programmes in ageing and to promote intergenerational solidarity.
